JPEGs assemble for tens of millions of dollars, auction houses selling blockchain-based works and accepting cryptocurrency for payment, fashion brands release digital items… 2021 marked a historic period of growth for non-fungible tokens (NFTs). According to DappRadar’s 2021 industry report, NFT trading volume exceeded USD 23 billion, compared with less than USD 100 million in 2020. NFTs are unique crypto-assets that may represent digital collectibles, artworks or other rights. However, NFTs should not be described as entirely unregulated. Under Regulation (EU) 2023/1114 (MiCA), crypto-assets that are genuinely unique and not fungible with other crypto-assets are generally excluded from its scope. Nevertheless, NFTs issued in large collections or possessing characteristics of fungible crypto-assets may fall within MiCA, while other financial services, consumer protection, intellectual property and anti-money laundering requirements may still apply.
During the NFT market expansion of 2021, OpenSea emerged as one of the leading NFT marketplaces and attracted substantial venture capital investment. At the beginning of 2022, the company announced a funding round valuing it at approximately USD 13.3 billion. This valuation reflected investor expectations during the NFT market boom and should not be interpreted as the company’s current market value. NFT marketplace valuations and trading activity have fluctuated substantially since 2021.
Celebridades: Paris Hilton, Eminem, Naomi Osaka, Tom Brady…
During 2021, blockchain-based gaming, commonly referred to as GameFi, became one of the fastest-growing segments of the decentralised application industry. Play-to-earn games such as Axie Infinity attracted substantial user activity and investment. According to DappRadar’s 2021 industry report, blockchain games accounted for approximately 49% of unique active wallets interacting with decentralised applications by the end of the year. These figures describe historical activity in 2021 and should not be presented as current market shares.
Following Facebook’s rebranding to Meta in October 2021, investor interest in metaverse-related blockchain projects increased significantly. According to DappRadar’s 2021 industry report, blockchain-based virtual worlds generated more than USD 500 million in trading volume and reached an estimated market capitalisation of USD 3.6 billion during that period. These figures reflect the market conditions of 2021 and should not be interpreted as current valuations. Investments in metaverse-related NFTs remain subject to substantial market volatility, liquidity risks and potential loss of capital.
